Ypres is in the Province of West Vlaanderen (West Flanders) and has a population of about 35,000. 

The town was virtually flattened during the conflict of the First World War but has been rebuilt to keep its original character. Perhaps the best example of this is the Lakenhalle (Cloth Halls) which was originally finished in 1304 and following its destruction has now been rebuilt in the original style.
