Rhone Alpes is in central France and consists of 8 Departments, 01 Ain, 07 Ardeche, 26 Drome, 38 Isere, 42 Loire, 69 Rhone, 73 Savoie and 74 Haute Savoie. The prefecture of the region is Lyon. Lyon, founded by the Romans is the second city of the country and is the principal city in the region. The Rhone valley to the west of the region is one of the main routes from north to south and has many of the well known wine growing areas such as Beaujolais and Cote du Rhone. The sports resorts in the Alps now cater for all year round sports with spectacular scenery winter and summer. Many campsites in the Alps provide winter sports camping facilities for the more ambitious amongst the camping and caravanning fraternity. A drive to the top any of the Cols is well worth what can, in many cases, be a long climb. On a clear day the views of snow topped peaks all around is a sight not to be missed. The descents can be a bit disconcerting when you are most likely to be passed by one of the many cyclist who descend at considerable speed and think they are on the Tour de France, about to take the yellow jersey. NB. There are currently 5 departments in this Region where we have not taken pictures . They are: 07 Ardeche, 26 Drome, 38 Isere, 42 Loire and 69 Rhone. Consequently these Departments are not included in the selection list on the left.
