Avila is the Provincial Capital of the Province of Avila. It is in the Region of Castilla Y Leon.
The 11th century walls of the city really makes this a sight to see, inside the walls is no disappointment either with many interesting buildings to see. There are 88 towers around the city which is completely walled and it has been estimated that in the walls there are around 2500 niches for marksmen. This is Spain's highest provincial capital situated at over 1100 m.. Avila's cathedral was built between the 12th and 16th century and has Renaissance, Gothic and Romanesque parts to it. There is a campsite on the southern edge of the city on the N403 towards Toledo and is ideally situated for a walk around the city. |
